Barrio – The Vibrant Latin American Themed Cocktail Bar in Shoreditch

23rd July 2021 · by Ross Young

Shoreditch’s very own cocktail bar Barrio, is just as it should be – lively, colourful, and the perfect place to let your hair down. With a unique theme and special offers for every night of the week, there’s always a reason to head to Barrio, whether you’re a fan of the Samba Social on Mondays or prefer the sound of Hot Sauce Saturdays.

In Brazil, the term ‘barrio’ refers to a particular community or region within a municipality. Most inner-city barrios are bursting with flair and an abundance of soul, populated by fun-loving residents who love to dance the night away.

A huge array of south American cocktails and hearty snack food options are available each and every day and celebrate the unique and fanciful flavours of Latin American cuisine.

If that’s not enough, ‘La Isla Bonita’ effortlessly couples bottomless brunch with 80s musical bingo every Saturday. We take you through this unique brunch option in detail below.

Not yet convinced? Here are some reasons why your next day or night out should be at Barrio.

‘La Isla Bonita’ bottomless brunch.

So, here’s the thing about ‘La Isla Bonita’ – it truly is a bottomless brunch experience like no other. Hosted by a live DJ and incorporating games of 80s musical bingo, it’s easy to get carried away. The format for Barrio’s bottomless brunch is easy enough to follow, bottomless drinks for two hours and a choice of burger from the following:

 • San Pedro’s beef burger. • Saint & Sinner vegan burger.• Chica Bonita chicken burger. • Queso Libre Halloumi burger.

Your burger is preceded by a mimosa welcome drink and followed by Barrio churros with chocolate dipping sauce! As for drinks, you have a somewhat limited menu to choose from, which is perhaps the main drawback to Barrio’s offering, and you have two hours of the following:

 • Vai Vai Prosecco. • Sol Mexican lager. • Spiced Rum Sangaree cocktail.

You can book tickets to enjoy bottomless brunch every Saturday between 11.30 am & 2.00 pm, or between 3.00 pm and 5.00 pm. The price is currently £50pp, and you can book your tickets here

‘Amigo Days’ drink deals.

The cocktail selection at Barrio is genuinely mouth-watering. Their ‘Play on Playa’ range is their signature twist on much-loved classics and includes ‘Love is in the Pear’ and ‘Marga-Rita Ora,’ the latter in particular needing little introduction. If you fancy something a bit more adventurous, the ‘Barrio Bebidas’ are a little more daring. Take the Flamingo dreams, for instance, a delicate mixture of Eristoff vodka, fortified wine, kwai feh lychee liqueur, cranberry, and lemon. Two of those, please! While a house bebida will set you back anywhere between £10.50 and £12.00 per go, Barrio’s ‘Amigo Days’ ensure you can enjoy cut-price cocktails every day of the week.

Their current Amigo days line up gives you the chance to buy the following cocktails each weekday between 12 pm and 7 pm for just £6, and the menu is as follows:

Monday: Classic mojito.

Tuesday: Tommy’s margarita.

Wednesday: Pina colada.

Thursday: Paloma.

Friday: Dark & stormy.

If cocktails aren’t your thing, no problem. As well as several draft beers and bottled South American lagers, the comprehensive wine list comprised of grapes from Spain, Portugal, Argentina, and Chile will help you find something to your liking.

It’s not always easy to pair food with cocktails, but it’s often essential! When you’re enjoying a few innocent libations on a night out, it’s not unusual to yearn for a little snack to help you on your way. In this regard, Barrio cocktail bar has you more than covered. Although their menu is more of a snack collection as opposed to a hearty meal offering, there’s more than enough food to keep your stomach lined while you’re getting your salsa on.

Think Latin American cantina, and you’re pretty much on point. Delicious sharing plates of topped nachos, as well as a selection of meat and plant-based tacos, are the foundation of Barrio’s menu. If you fancy something a little more substantial, their burritos are to die for. For plant-based guests, the rainbow burrito is akin to a work of art. The buffalo chicken or cheeseburger burrito would make for a popular choice for those without a dietary requirement.

Equally tantalising is the excellent selection of fried ‘wings n ‘tings,’ with the Don Diablo wings tempting the most adventurous into firing up their taste buds, quite literally. Finally, the menu is rounded off with a selection of Latin American inspired burgers and loaded fries. The pork pinata fries deserve a special mention; think crispy skin-on fries, piled high with Barrio’s pork pibil, sour crema and pink pickled onions. All to be washed down with a Caipirinha. Perfection.

While Barrio cocktail bar is open to walk-ins, it’s much better to book a table in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly if you’re in a group of more than two. There’s a decent outdoor seating patio on which to enjoy these warm summer nights, and you can book online here.

There’s nothing quite like samba music to get you off your seat, particularly after a couple of confidence-inducing cocktails! Every Monday night at Barrio, get involved in the ‘Samba Social.’ From 8 pm, enjoy £5 caipirinhas and a live samba band that will put you in the carnival mood. For the uninitiated, a caipirinha is the signature drink of Brazil, made with a spirit called cachaca, sugar, and lime. I doubt you’ll find a better ‘caip’ anywhere this side of Rio.

Our verdict.

Barrio Shoreditch brings the Brazilian carnival spirit to the heart of London with its vivacious menu and adherence to its south American roots. ‘La Isla Bonita’ bottomless brunch is undoubtedly unique and appealing, but some might be a little put off by the limited choice of bottomless drink options on offer. But if Barrio’s 80s bingo bottomless brunch isn’t up your street, you shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to visit this vibrant cocktail bar and eatery in the heart of Shoreditch. Its samba vibes will get even the most reticent visitor off their bar stool.
